Tottenham are reportedly set to scout AEK Athens’ Champions League group stage clash against Benfica on Tuesday night.

According to Greek news outlet Sportime.gr, Spurs are watching goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas and up-and-coming midfielder Konstantinos Galanopoulos.

It is understood that Spurs are more interested in Barkas, 24, as the North London club sees the Greece international as a potential back-up option to Hugo Lloris – and does this mean that Paulo Gazzaniga’s future at Tottenham is now under threat?

Gazzaniga, 26, has been extremely impressive for the Lilywhites in the last few weeks with Lloris and Michel Vorm both injured.

The Argentine shot-stopper was signed from Southampton in 2017, but had to wait until the last few weeks to get his first real run in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team and his form has seen him become an instant favourite among the clubs’ fans.

He has made big saves against Huddersfield, Watford and Brighton and it would be no shock to hear some Spurs fans urging Pochettino to continue using Gazzaniga over Lloris once he is back to fitness.

As impressive as Gazzaniga has been, his time in the starting line-up is bound to end soon as Pochettino cannot overlook club captain and World Cup winner Lloris.

What is worrying though is that it looks like Tottenham are looking for a new second-choice goalkeeper and with Gazzaniga currently third-choice, that could mean that his future in North London is going to come under threat.

Barkas is a good goalkeeper. The 6ft 4 (transfermarkt) colossus has kept four clean sheets in five league games already this season and played a huge role in helping AEK defy the odds to reach the Champions League group stages.

But he is not as good as Gazzaniga and it is odd that Pochettino would be looking at him amid the Argentine’s solid form.
