Tottenham keep close tabs on Porto captain Herrera, Liverpool also keen

|

Tottenham are in the hunt to sign Porto captain Hector Herrera, according to the Plymouth Herald.

The newspaper claims on their website that Liverpool are also interested in signing the 28-year-old midfielder, who will be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

It is understood that Spurs are watching Herrera closely and they will undoubtedly be impressed with the Mexico international performing well in Porto’s opening Champions League group stage games against Schalke and Galatasaray.

Good move for Tottenham?

Mauricio Pochettino needs to upgrade his central midfield options next year with Mousa Dembele’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and doubts being cast over the performances of Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier.

Can Herrera replace any of them? Well, the Mexican deep-lying playmaker is a completely different type of midfielder and Pochettino could do with a like-for-like replacement of Dembele.

It wouldn’t hurt to add strength in depth by signing Herrera, especially as he is available for free next year, but Pochettino would be better off looking at other midfield targets.

Likely to happen?

Herrera still has a while before he can sign a new contract for Porto but he can be approached on a pre-contract by other clubs in January.

Spurs and Liverpool are both reportedly interested and once the Mexico international is in the last six months of his deal, they can make their move.

However they are likely to be joined by clubs across Europe in trying to sign the 28-year-old, so right now Spurs’ chances look quite low.
