Jan Vertonghen could be sidelined until the end of November with a hamstring injury in “bad news” for club and country, according to Roberto Martinez.

The Belgium manager revealed today, as quoted by HLN correspondent Kristof Terreur, that the Tottenham defender might miss the national team’s next two camps.

Given that the November international break finishes on 20 November, that would mean Vertonghen would be absent for at least seven weeks.

The bad news keeps coming for Spurs as the key players drop like flies. Vertonghen originally sustained the hamstring injury in the first half of last Saturday’s win against Huddersfield. He pulled up late in the opening period, but carried on until half-time, when he was finally withdrawn. For such an experienced player, that now appears a foolish mistake. Tottenham revealed on Tuesday that Vertonghen would be out until after the forthcoming international break, without divulging further details. Extensive scans means the club’s worst fears have been realised and, as Martinez points out, he could now be out until the end of November. With Dele Alli, Mousa Dembele, Serge Aurier and star creator Christian Eriksen also suffering from serious injuries, it means Mauricio Pochettino is done to the bare bones, and not just for the weekend Premier League clash against Cardiff City.
