A section of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to annihilate Victor Wanyama for his performance in the 4-2 defeat in the Champions League to Barcelona on Wednesday night.

With Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffering from a high number of injuries, the Kenya international was recalled to the XI and started in the midfield in a bid to hold off the likes of Lionel Messi and co.

However that wasn’t to be with some Spurs fans blasting the former Southampton midfielder on social media.

OPINION

Wanyama is no longer the player he once was. The Kenya international used to be such a reliable presence in the centre of the park but he was completely blown away by Barca on Wednesday. Wanyama has spent a lot of the last couple of years sidelined with injury and that could have had a major impact on the player’s mobility. Either way, it just shows how important Mousa Dembele is to this side because he is heads and shoulders above Wanyama while doing a similar job. Dembele’s contract expires at the end of this season and at the moment, it looks as though he is going to leave. Pochettino has to get his replacement right because Wanyama simply isn’t good enough to fill those boots against the better teams. Spurs fans will be worried about what the future holds with Wanyama set to play more often, especially as they were frustrated by him at Wembley.
