A section of Tottenham fans have been reacting on Twitter after it was confirmed that Jan Vertonghen will be out of action until at least December with a hamstring injury.

Spurs announced via their official website on Thursday that the 31-year-old defender picked up the injury against Huddersfield last month and remains under close watch as he aims to get back to full fitness by the end of the year.

Some Tottenham supporters have taken to Twitter to show just how gutted they are about the news, with one going as far to say that the club is heading to the Championship.

OPINION

You can understand why these Tottenham fans are so upset about this news because Vertonghen is easily one of the best and most under-rated centre-backs in European football. Mauricio Pochettino still has plenty of centre-back options which is a relief, but ideally, no one wants to lose one of their best players no matter how prepared they are for it to happen. Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld should be just fine and players like Eric Dier and Juan Foyth can also play there if they need to. Hopefully none of them pick up injuries between then and Vertonghen’s return date but seeing how depleted Pochettino’s squad has been lately, it would not be a shock. Pochettino may lighten the workload in training in a bid to reduce these injuries and he could also think about rotating his side a lot more than he already has been doing. Hopefully that doesn’t affect results, but that is the cost of these kind of blows.
