Kris Boyd has revealed in the Scottish Sun that he was “wrong” about Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Kilmarnock forward and ex-Ibrox star admitted his fierce criticism of the Colombia international in the past was unfair and that he has emphatically now won him over.

Boyd made the admission ahead of Rangers’ Scottish League Cup semi-final showdown against Aberdeen on Sunday, which Morelos will miss due to suspension.

“At the beginning I was  critical of the little Colombian and didn’t hold back on what I thought he was missing from his game,” Boyd told the Scottish Sun. “But I’ve got to be honest and say I got it wrong. He’s shown lately that he’s a huge player for Rangers with the way he gets at people.

“Clearly he still has issues he needs to keep a check on during games, as he is always liable to do something daft. But his play has been excellent and I think he’ll be a massive miss to Rangers in this game.”

OPINION

Credit to Boyd for holding his hand up and admitting he got it wrong. To be fair to the outspoken striker who once admirably filled the boots in which Morelos now strides at Ibrox, he is not the only critic of the Colombian now eating his words. Morelos has been growing into his role as the main man at Rangers and, along with James Tavernier and Connor Goldson, is one of the first names on the team sheet under Steven Gerrard. He is the top scorer with 12 goals from 21 matches this season, plus a further eight assists, and is proving a real handful to defenders not only in domestic competition but also in Europe. Morelos’ penchant for needless bookings and red cards, a consequence for immaturity and a hair-trigger temper, has coloured many views of his ability. Strip away the nonsense and he is a rising star of a centre-forward with the movement, mobility and all-round menace to spearhead Rangers to great things.
