Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has confirmed that midfielder Scott Arfield is a doubt for their Premiership clash against Hamilton on Sunday.

Arfield picked up a hamstring complaint over the international break and missed out on Canada’s 4-0 win over Dominica in the CONCACAF Nations League qualifier.

Gerrard has now confirmed that the 29-year-old is doubtful for their trip to New Douglas Park to take on Hamilton on Sunday, with the Ibrox boss speaking in the pre-match press conference, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.

OPINION

This is a big blow for Rangers ahead of the return of the Premiership after the international break. Their trip to Hamilton is an important one, with the Light Blues needing a big performance to dispel concerns over their away form so far this term. Arfield has been in brilliant form in recent weeks for the Gers and has become a really key player for Gerrard since his free transfer from Burnley over the summer. The international break always carries risks and Gerrard will be bemoaning this setback, but the Gers still have the required quality to overcome Academical on Sunday. Their squad is far superior to the one at Martin Canning’s disposal, and anything other than a win will be deemed a big disappointment for the club. Hamilton have not had a good campaign so far and they will be low on confidence against a Rangers side who has run through teams at points this season. Hopefully that happens for Gerrard on the road as he looks to address their away form on Sunday.
