Tottenham Hotspur are set to reopen contract talks with Christian Eriksen after shelving negotiations following an impasse in the summer, according to The Sun

The newspaper report that Eriksen has claimed he is happy at Tottenham, a major admission which has jolted the club back into action following those unsuccessful talks in the summer.

The Sun claim that Eriksen wants to more than double his wages from £70,000-a-week to £160,000-a-week, with his current deal set to expire in 2020.

It is said that Real Madrid and PSG are both monitoring the situation.

Eriksen is quoted as saying: “I’m just focusing on football. I leave the talking to someone else. But I will say I am very happy where I am.”

OPINION

This looks to be a sensible move from Tottenham as they look to tie Eriksen down to a longer, more lucrative deal. There is no doubt that the Denmark international should be earning far more than his current £70,000-a-week, with top earners on excess of £100,000-a-week while Harry Kane is reportedly on double that. Eriksen has been a key player for Spurs for many years, and his influence has only grown every season. Mauricio Pochettino could hardly manage without him, so the club should be doing all they can to get him to sign this new deal. There is no doubt that he is worth his demands of £160,000-a-week, so while it is understandable the club are reluctant to agree to that amount, the fact is that he could easily earn that (and probably more) somewhere else. His admission that he is happy at Spurs is a promising one, and they must now jump on that to help negotiations along and find a solution which pleases all parties.
