Tottenham are almost certain to sign a player in January and a playmaker will be top of their priority list, according to a reliable journalist.

Football London correspondent Alastair Gold reported in a Q&A on the site’s live blog on Friday (1.59pm) that he would be “stunned” if Mauricio Pochettino does not strengthen in the winter window after he was “let down” by the club over the summer.

Gold predicted Spurs will look to sign an attacking midfielder in the mould of summer target Jack Grealish to provide competition for Christian Eriksen and said he would be “surprised if Spurs don’t make a move for that kind of player in January”.

OPINION

Spurs fans would have been stunned if they had been told last May there would be no signings for the entire window – a Premier League first – as the club sat by, waited and waited until it was too late. The club have started the season reasonably well, although they face an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages for a second consecutive campaign. Pochettino has hinted he is not entirely happy with his lot, regularly making the point that this is the toughest of his five seasons so far, without explicitly explaining why. Is it because he’s got a squad he’s not entirely happy with? Certainly, the manager expected some high profile summer outgoings, and to be given a kitty that could allow him to reinforce the squad as he saw fit. That did not happen, and there is a sense that the manager feels he is doing the job with one hand tied behind his back. Surely, the hierarchy have no option but to back him in January.
