Dele Alli is close to agreeing a new long-term Tottenham contract worth nearly £100,000-a-week after a major breakthrough, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper site claim the attacking midfielder is on course to commit to a deal following extensive talks which have been “ongoing for months”.

The Mail report Alli is set to double his wages from £50,000-a-week as he prepares to sign a new agreement to replace his current one, which expires in three years’ time.

OPINION

For a 22-year-old, Alli has already achieved a huge amount. A key man for club and country, his record of goalscoring, goal creating and big-match moments is hugely impressive. Along with talisman Harry Kane and playmaker Christian Eriksen, he is among the holy trinity of Spurs stars who Mauricio Pochettino has built his team around. With the club due to move into their new stadium in 2019, the signing of a long-term contract for Alli has especially significant repercussions and there will be joy in the boardroom that it will not drag on in the same way as the Toby Alderweireld or Eriksen stalemates. The England international is back in training after being sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury, but Pochettino must not make the mistake of rushing him back for Monday’s Premier League showdown against Manchester City. Spurs need Alli in fine fettle for the medium and long term, and need to look after him.
