Tottenham’s main January transfer target is Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to the Times.

The newspaper claim Spurs have prioritised the capture of the France international, 21, even though he is valued at £50million by the Ligue 1 club.

The Times report manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to beef up his squad after failing to sign a single player over the summer window.

OPINION

NDombele doesn’t just sound like Mousa Dembele. He plays like him, too. A central midfielder who combines grit with guile, the Frenchman is powerful, technically adroit and able to dominate in the centre of the pitch, from where he can win the ball and launch attacks. While Dembele is aged 31 and in the final year of his contract, Ndombele is 10 years younger and has his best years ahead of him. It appears unlikely Spurs would pay £50million for the player who cost Lyon around £7million in the summer when they converted his season-long loan from Amiens into a permanent deal. Certainly, Spurs need a central midfield dominant figure to complement English duo Harry Winks, not only due to Dembele’s seemingly imminent exit, but also with major doubts over the fitness over Victor Wanyama, who has been troubled by knee problems over the last year and has barely played.
