Southampton are ready to make a move to sign Leeds United star Kemar Roofe ahead of the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Premier League big guns are keeping a close eye on the United forward, 25, after his stunning start to the campaign under new manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Football Insider report Roofe has also attracted interest from Burnley and Brighton, and the clubs are keeping close tabs on him as he prepares to open talks with Leeds over a new contract.

Good move for Leeds?

Definitely not. If Leeds have any ambition to join the Premier League elite, then they will offer Roofe the contract that will tie him down to a long-term contract. The player’s form – he scored four goals in the club’s first six matches of the season before injury struck – means he has become one of United’s prize asset and is now valued at north of £10million. With little over 18 months remaining on his contract, Leeds are in a vulnerable situation and will have to make the 25-year-old one of their top earners to keep him at Elland Road. Leeds certainly can’t afford to lose him, especially with summer signing Patrick Bamford sidelined until January.

Likely to happen?

It’s certainly possible, given Roofe’s contract situation and the money swimming around in the Premier League. Southampton could do with another regular goalscorer and if they offer Leeds a sizeable fee, don’t rule out the possibility of the Yorkshire giants cashing in, just as they did with Chris Wood last year.
