Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah scored his 49th and 50th goals for Liverpool on Wednesday night in the Champions League as his side cantered to a 4-0 win against Red Star Belgrade.

He hit the landmark in just 65 games and Mirror journalist David Maddock has put that in perspective by comparing his stats to Liverpool legends.

He said that being the fastest player to 50 goals in Liverpool history is “impressive enough” but to do it 12 games faster than the next best player is “astonishing”.

Albert Stubbins took 77 games to hit 50 goals, while Ian Rush took 87, Luis Saurez took 91 and Kenny Dalglish 99.

He said that when you racked Salah up against these Liverpool greats, his achievement is “mind-blowing”.

OPINION

Wow, when you put it in this context, Salah’s achievement is nothing short of staggering. The funny thing is that people have been criticisng him for not scoring enough this season, such was his prowess last season. The reason for that is that he’s been seen to miss a number of chances that he was tucking away last season – not easy by any means but good chances nonetheless. We’re not taking anything away from Salah but you’ve also got to put his scoring in the context of this attacking Liverpool team. The players around him mean that he gets a staggering amount of chances to score. He’s obviously got to get himself in those positions and then finish them off, but Liverpool are by no means a one-man team. They boast the best attacking trio in the Premier League – better even then top-scorers Man City – and Salah is the cream of that crop. Rush, Suarez and Fowler are absolute legends of the club and Salah has literally blown them away in the race for 50 goals. No one, not even Salah, would have anticipated that when he signed from Roma for £38million in the summer of 2017.
