Everton striker Fraser Hornby has confirmed that he has undergone surgery after he was ruled out of the Scotland under-21s’ clash against Ukraine on Friday night.

Scott Gemmill – manager of the under-21s – had ruled the young ace out of the international clash after confirming that Hornby had suffered an ankle injury while playing for the Toffees.

However, Hornby has now confirmed via his personal Twitter account that he has had surgery, and that he is now on the “road to recovery”.

He said: “Operation done, on the road to recovery now, thanks for all the messages.”

The 19-year-old has grabbed five goals in two games for his country previously, netting in the games against Andorra and Holland.

OPINION

It is good news not only for Scotland, but Everton as well that Hornby is on the road to recovery. He is one of Everton’s brightest prospects, so having to spend a prolonged period on the sidelines would have really hampered his lightning progress. He will no doubt take the senior team by storm in the forseeable future, as he has already proved that he is capable of scoring on a regular basis – if anything, he is just the player that Marco Silva needs right now. His team lacks depth up front, and he would be perfect to lead the line for the Toffees. However, it is important not to get too carried away, as he needs to ensure he recovers before he thinks about his first team chances. Nevertheless, both Scotland and Everton will be hugely relieved that he is not out for a long time.
