Manchester City are set to hand Ilkay Gundogan a new deal amid rising interest from across Europe, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 28-year-old midfielder expects to be offered a new and improved deal once the congested fixtures around Christmas has cleared up.

It is understood that the former Borussia Dortmund ace is earning £90,000-a-week on his current Man City contract, but he will be handed a payrise by committing his long-term future to the Premier League champions.

OPINION

When he is fit, Gundogan is one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League. Unfortunately he has had major injury issues during his career but Pep Guardiola has been able to get the best out of him this season in his 10 appearances across all competitions. It makes you think how good the Germany international would be if it wasn’t for his injuries. The midfielder was one of Jurgen Klopp’s best players during his time at Dortmund and it is without doubt that he would have cost more than the £20million that Man City paid for him in 2016 if he wasn’t so injury-prone. The Citizens have experienced first hand how frustrating it is to have such a quality player in their side who struggles to remain fit, but Guardiola is obviously impressed by what he has seen from Gundogan and is handing him this new and improved deal.
