Steven Gerrard has hinted that Wes Foderingham could start in Rangers’ BetFred Cup semi-final clash against Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Foderingham, 27, has only made two domestic appearances this season, with both of them coming in the Gers’ run to the semi-final when they beat Kilmarnock and Ayr United.

Allan McGregor has been Gerrard’s mainstay in between the sticks this season, but speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Rangers boss has admitted that he is yet to decide who will start versus the Dons.

“I haven’t made a decision on the goalkeeping situation just yet,” he said, as quoted by Rangers’ official Twitter account.

OPINION

Foderingham knew that he was going to drop down the pecking order when McGregor was signed from Hull in the summer so he should expect to stay on the bench this weekend. It is fine to play him in the earlier rounds on the competition, but Gerrard has to pick his best team available when they are just two wins away from lifting silverware. McGregor has been outstanding since he return to Ibrox. The Scotland international has produced big performance after big performance and if he starts versus Aberdeen, he will surely rise to the occasion once again and help the Light Blues book their spot in the final. It is a shame for Foderingham because he probably will not play against until the Scottish Cup kicks off. It would not be a shock to see him ask to leave in January though because he is too good to be a second-choice goalkeeper.
