Everton are plotting a move for Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck as his contract edges closer to expiry, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper has claimed via their website that the 27-year-old’s deal with the Gunners is set to run out at the end of the season and he is nowhere near to agreeing fresh terms in North London.

It is understood that Everton are monitoring the England international’s situation at the Emirates after initially holding an interest in him in the summer transfer window.

Good move for Everton?

Marco Silva really needs to improve his centre-forward options in the January transfer window and Welbeck would certainly be a solid addition to his strike force.

He has scored 42 goals in 203 Premier League appearances, but for a lot of them he has mainly been used as a substitute or shoved out on the flanks.

The former Manchester United star is naturally a striker but during pretty much all of his career he has been forced to play out wide as he has played second fiddle to a number of top forwards.

If Welbeck is signed and started up front, he could definitely be a good signing for the Toffees.

Likely to happen?

It is a difficult one because foreign clubs will be allowed to enter talks with Welbeck in January as his £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) deal will be in it’s last six months, but Everton will not be able to do that.

That could give overseas clubs the upper-hand in a bid to sign the striker, so the Toffees may have to make an offer to Arsenal.

The England international could be available for a low fee due to his contract situation so this definitely could happen.
