A section of Everton fans took to Twitter to brutalise Tom Davies after the midfielder’s inept performance in the 1-1 draw against Southampton on Tuesday night.

The Toffees bowed out of the Carabao Cup after the game went to a penalty shoot-out with Richarlison and Theo Walcott both missing their spot kicks.

However it was 20-year-old Davies who bore a the brunt of the criticism after the game on social media, with some Everton fans tearing the midfielder to shreds.

One supporter claimed that the England Under-21 international was “Championship level”, while another claimed that his form is “putrid”.

OPINION

Davies is still a young player, he’s only 20-years-old, but that has not stopped these unforgiving Everton fans from going in on him. Look, Davies is not going to be a regular starter in Marco Silva’s starting line-up, especially once Andre Gomes is up to speed. Then Silva will have better options to play and Davies can return to playing here and there to continue his development. The England Under-21 international is hardly amazing at this stage of his career but he needs to be backed by his supporters. Yes, he would be getting more stick from fans if he wasn’t born in Liverpool and grew up supporting the Toffees, but that does not give the right for fans who don’t rate the midfielder a platform to criticise fellow supporters for standing by one of their players. Everton should have tried harder to win against Southampton and that really should be Silva’s fault, and not that of Davies, who has probably played more than he would have expected this season.
