Three managers are in the running to become the new Aston Villa manager, according to Jim White.

The Sky Sports and talkSPORT broadcaster and journalist delivered an update on Villa’s search for a new boss on his personal Twitter account on Monday morning.

White explained Villa will imminently approach Celtic for permission to speak to Brendan Rodgers, ex-Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov could have talks and Thierry Henry is also a strong candidate for the vacant post.

OPINION

This is quite a twist in Villa’s search for a new boss. It was reported yesterday by the Mail that the Midlands giants had agreed terms with Henry, who was set to be assisted by John Terry, and the deal was seemingly done. It appears someone might have got ahead of themselves and those reports were slightly wide of the mark. Villa seem particularly keen on trying to prise Brendan Rodgers from Celtic. He is certainly a different proposition to Henry and Petrov, both of whom are managerial novices. They had stellar playing careers, particularly Premier League great Henry, but their top-level experience in the dugout amounts to the Frenchman being Roberto Martinez’s Belgium number two for a few years. By contrast, Rodgers is an experienced boss who has managed two clubs successfully in the Premier League, secured promotion from the Championship and landed the double treble in Scotland.
