A section of Tottenham fans have been raging on Twitter after Gareth Southgate played Harry Kane off the bench in England’s 1-0 friendly win against Switzerland on Tuesday night.
The Three Lions were already one goal up courtesy of Marcus Rashford when Kane made his appearance in the 61st minute, even though Southgate has admitted the Spurs forward needs a rest.
Some Tottenham fans have been angered by Southgate’s decision to play Kane in what they believe is a pointless game, with one calling it “absolute madness”.

So Gareth Southgate brings on the player who he has publicly stated is suffering from burnout and needs to have a rest.
Absolutely essential that Harry Kane is ready to face Liverpool for us on Saturday, to bring him while leading the game is irritatingly confusing.#THFC #COYS

OPINION
Tottenham face Liverpool in a huge game on Saturday so in order to get a win, Mauricio Pochettino needs all of his best players fully fit and fresh for the game. Kane only played for roughly 30 minutes and managed to avoid any kind of injury, but it was certainly a risk by Southgate and you can understand the concern of these fans. Kane has not been at his best for Spurs in the early games of this season. Although he has broken this so-called August curse, he has not exactly been at his usual high level and that is perhaps due to the long World Cup campaign that he had in the summer. Against Colombia, Sweden and Croatia, Kane was hardly impressive and it could be that he needs a rest. He is not going to get that rest at his club though and the introduction of the UEFA Nations League means that it’s even harder for him to get one in international breaks.
