Writing on the wall for Foderingham

There is every chance Wes Foderingham could play his final Rangers match tomorrow.

The Englishman, 27, has lost his place as the Ibrox number one following the summer signing of Allan McGregor and the only way he will regain it is if the 36-year-old breaks down through injury.

Foderingham admitted at a media conference today (Tuesday) ahead of the Scottish League Cup clash against Ayr United that McGregor has been “brilliant” this season and deserved to keep his place.

Intriguingly, the younger of the two senior keepers also revealed he has not been given any guarantees by the Rangers coaching staff about playing in cup competitions this season.

It is common at big clubs for the second-choice keeper to get match time in the secondary competitions, which paves the way for Foderingham to make his third appearance of the season tomorrow at Ibrox.

But, should, as expected, Rangers reach the semi-final stage, the club are likely to want to play first choice McGregor as the opportunity to secure a much-needed trophy edges closer.

With the January transfer window providing a possible exit door for Foderingham, the Scottish League Cup might be the final time he wears the blue jersey.

Foderingham was expected to move back to England over the summer, but it was Jak Alnwick who left instead as he joined Scunthorpe United on loan.

Signed by former Gers manager Mark Warburton from Swindon in the summer of 2015, the Englishman was the undisputed number one during his first three seasons.

His new secondary status is, as he admits, very difficult to get accustomed to.

Foderingham is at an age when he is approaching his peak and is likely to feel that would be better spent as the number one rather than getting splinters on his backside from the Ibrox bench.
