Steven Gerrard has revealed that new contracts are in the offing for RangersĀ captain James Tavernier and striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Gers manager has confirmed that a deal is near for Morelos, who was targeted by Bordeaux this summer, while he’s keen to keep Tavernier, wanted by West Brom, at the club for the foreseeable future.

“Alfredo’s not going anywhere,” he told the Scottish Sun. “We’re speaking to his representatives about a new deal. I hear it’s close.

“The same goes for James Tavernier. We want to offer James a new deal, to stay here and be part of it, help us be successful in the future.”

Both of these moves make sense. Morelos, other than an exceedingly hot head, has been a terrific purchase for Rangers. He looks set to be their leading man up front for many years to come. Tavernier, on the other hand, has been sensational for the club since he joined from Wigan in 2015. He was named captain this summer, and Gerrard clearly thinks a lot of him. West Brom’s interest was a concern, as the Baggies would’ve been able to offer him Championship football and a lot more money than Rangers. It says a lot about the team that Gers are trying to be that they didn’t let him leave. In years past, perhaps Tavernier would’ve been allowed to escape from Ibrox, but the club ensured that didn’t happen this time. He, like Morelos, will be a key player for the club moving forwards. These are encouraging moves from Gerrard, as it’s always good to keep your best players locked down on long term deals.
