Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon is set to be axed for Scotland’s Nations League clash against Albania tonight (Monday) and replaced by Rangers counterpart Allan McGregor, according to BBC Sport.

The broadcaster interpret manager Alex McLeish’s suggestion that “we’re certainly thinking of other players” as a clear hint that McGregor will take the place of Gordon.

The Celtic number one was between the sticks for last Friday’s friendly against Belgium, when Scotland were hammered 4-0 at Hampden Park.

OPINION

Gordon has been the established Scotland number one for some time but it would be the right call by McLeish to dump him in favour of the in-form McGregor. The Rangers summer signing blotted his copybook with his kick at Kristoffer Ajer during the Old Firm, but it was hardly his fault he went unpunished. Apart from that, McGregor has barely put a foot wrong since returning to Ibrox for a second spell. He has looked the part in each of his 11 appearances and it would be fully deserving if he was handed a 39th cap by Scotland for what is a crucial game. The Tartan Army badly need a win after McLeish’s reign started with four defeats in five matches. McGregor is a commanding figure whose reflexes have not withered with age, and , at 36, he has looked a superior keeper this season to Gordon, who has been below his best for some time.
