Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan is a major doubt for his side’s clash against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend even though he is making progress in his recovery from a groin injury, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims via their website that the 26-year-old is not expected to feature in Saturday’s game at Villa Park, despite recently returning to training.

Hogan, who according to the Mirror earns £38,500-a-week on his deal with Villa, is yet to make an appearance for the Championship club this season due to injury.

OPINION

Even if Hogan was back to fitness this weekend, would he get anywhere near to Steve Bruce’s starting line-up? Since joining Aston Villa from Brentford in January 2017, the Republic of Ireland international has scored just 10 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions. Jonathan Kodjia and Tammy Abraham will undoubtedly be above him in the pecking order and once Keinan Davis is back to fitness, he too could be chosen over Hogan so his development doesn’t stall. Hogan has not been a great signing for Villa and his time with the club will surely come to an end soon unless something drastic happens. He won’t get many games this season and with him being on a big wage, it would not be a shock to see the West Midlands club try to get rid of him. A loan exit in January is certainly a possibility for the former Brentford striker.
