Chesterfield boss Martin Allen believes that West Ham United will feel the loss of former manager David Moyes now that he is gone.

The club appointed current boss Manuel Pellegrini earlier this summer, and Allen has admitted that he was rather surprised that the Hammers opted to go with the Chilean.

He heaped praise on Moyes, remarking on how well he thought Moyes had done at the London Stadium by bringing discipline and some organisation to the team.

“They’re struggling and it was interesting that they decided to go with Manuel Pellegrini this season and buy more new players,” he wrote in his column in the print edition of the Daily Mail [10/9].

“I thought David Moyes had done fantastically well and brought some discipline and organisation to the team. I don’t see that West Ham have the budget to play the Arsenal way, which they seem to aspire to.

“Moyes’ qualities may be more appreciated now he’s gone.”

OPINION

Allen is right – the appointment of Pellegrini was a rather bizarre one. He had not worked in the Premier League for a while, and it was surprising that he went to a club like West Ham having previously won the title with Manchester City. At the moment, things do not seem to be clicking for the new manager, which is a shame considering the amount of money that the board have pumped into bringing new players in. Fingers crossed that things will look up for the Irons soon, as they cannot afford to lose any more games on the bounce. However, Allen’s view on Moyes was interesting. He is a completely different manager to Pellegrini, so it is hard to compare the two and how they have fared at the club. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that West Ham were almost contenders for relegation last season under Moyes, no matter what qualities he brought to the team.
