Tottenham defenders Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies are in line for new contracts, according to Football London.

The Trinity Mirror site claim centre-back Vertonghen, 31, is set to be rewarded with an extension to his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2019.

Football London report left-back Davies, 25, is likely to be offered a new contract in the coming months after establishing himself as a first choice in the last year.

OPINION

As two regular starters in one of the best defences in the Premier League, it makes complete sense for Spurs to tie Vertonghen and Davies down to long-term deal. Extending the contract of the Belgium international should be an absolute priority for the Tottenham board and Mauricio Pochettino. He has said in recent weeks that the club have an option to extend his contract by 12 months and he expects them to do so. Spurs shouldn’t mess around, as Vertonghen will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in the January window and then leave on a free next summer. Given that he is playing as well as ever, and was voted the club’s player of the year last season amid some serious competition from Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and company, Tottenham would be foolish not to tie down such a key man. Vertonghen might turn 32 in April, but he is ageing better than a bottle of the finest Claret.
