Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min will return to the club on Wednesday and will undergo a fitness assessment after an intense run of international games, according to Evening Standard.

The newspaper report that the 26-year-old forward will be assessed by the club after playing eight games for South Korea within 26 days, and is unlikely to start against Liverpool this weekend.

The Standard claim that Tottenham are to open talks with South Korea officials over withdrawing the £85,000-a-week star [Silly Season] from the country’s friendly matches against Uruguay and Panama next month.

Tottenham have already agreed a deal to retain Son for South Korea’s games in November, as well as the first two games of the Asian Cup in January, in return for allowing him to play at the Asian Games.

OPINION

The gruelling nature of Son’s last month or so on international duty will come as a huge concern to Tottenham, who will be keen to get the South Korean involved straight away. Having played eight games in the space of 26 days, Son will understandably be exhausted, and Tottenham must be careful to manage his workload over the coming weeks. Luckily for them, the form of Lucas Moura – the Brazilian scored three times and registered one assist to win the Premier League Player of the Month for August – has meant Son’s absence has not been felt too keenly. Hopefully other players can continue to step up while Son is carefully assessed and then subsequently reintroduced to action. As the Standard say, it would be a huge surprise for Son to start against Liverpool this weekend, and he may not even make the bench for Saturday’s match considering his intense schedule over the last few weeks.
