Manchester City will make young starlet Phil Foden wait to sign a new contract as they look to prevent him from getting carried away, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper report that City are drawing up Foden a new five-year deal worth £25,000-a-week, but will wait to hand it to the 18-year-old talent.

The Star claim that both parties are on the same page when it comes to the contract, with Foden and his family being kept abreast of developments by director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Foden, who stands at 5ft 7in [Transfermarkt] currently earns £3,000-a-week.

OPINION

This looks like nothing to worry about at all for City fans who may have been concerned over the fact that the club are waiting to reward Foden for his first-team breakthrough. In fact it looks as though all parties are in agreement over the timing of the new contract, and there looks to be no issues at all from Foden’s side of things. He will obviously be keen to sign that new deal and start earning more money, but he likely knows that there is no rush at just 18 years old. His importance to the club and to manager Pep Guardiola are clear, and he will know that a regular first-team place awaits him in the near future. All he has to do is keep working hard and impressing in training, and the club are merely attempting to make sure that happens, instead of him going off track as he becomes distracted by money and fame.
