Liverpool clashed with Premier League title rivals Chelsea in the Carabao Cup at Anfield on Wednesday night, and ended up losing 2-1 despite taking the lead in the second-half.

And one glaring miss from striker Daniel Sturridge will be coming back to haunt him tonight.

After a tight first-half, striker Sturridge had the perfect opportunity to give his side the lead after a poor back pass put him clean through.

He rounded the keeper but with the open goal gaping he couldn’t get his foot round the ball and he somehow contrived to put it wide.

Liverpool fans flocked onto Twitter to give him stick after the horror miss, with one saying that it was time to “Sell Sturridge for any price”.

Other fans weren’t as complimentary.

Just over 10 minutes later, Sturridge made amends, scoring a much harder effort with an acrobatic overhead kick into an empty net.

However, it wasn’t enough with Chelsea hitting back twice, the second a worldie from Eden Hazard in the 85th minute.

After the goal, Liverpool fans rushed back onto Twitter to shower him in praise.

One fan summed it up perfectly, when he said, “Sturridge is such a frustrating player at times, but can’t help but love him.”

OPINION

Daniel Sturridge is a world-class striker, who has found himself in a real bind at Liverpool. He’s never going to get the games he needs because of players like Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. We were surprised that he stayed over the summer, although the one thing holding him back from a dream move is his injury record. So far this season that hasn’t come back to haunt him, but tonight’s miss will. It was an absolute howler. There’s no saying he would have scored his second if he’d missed the first, so the actual impact on the result isn’t direct. But it puts even more doubts in fans’ minds, and the reaction on Jurgen Klopp’s face when he missed – one of absolute disbelief – was an absolute picture. Eden Hazard’s winner was absolutely world class. He’s maybe one Premier League attacker who would walk into this talented Liverpool side, but this was harsh on the Reds who were the better side tonight.
