A section of fans have taken to Twitter to hail Joe Gomez for his performance in England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain last night.

The Liverpool defender played the full 90 minutes of the clash at Wembley as he was given the nod to start as one of three centre-backs alongside John Stones and Harry Maguire.

COMMENTARY:

Judging by the vast number of complimentary comments about Gomez during and after the defeat at Wembley, it is not just Liverpool fans who are swooning over the 21-year-old. The defender was selected by Gareth Southgate ahead of Kyle Walker after his hugely impressive start to the season at Anfield. He have a strong account of himself and finished the match with a pass completion rate of 94.1 per cent, the best of anyone in England’s starting XI. But it was not all wine and roses for Gomez, who misplaced a pass early on and his defending was described as a “little naive” by pundit Gary Neville when he had a nibble at an opponent and conceded a free-kick in a dangerous area. But he finished the match strongly and one late throw-in had many fans comparing him to Rory Delap, the greatest purveyors of throws in the Premier League era. Gomez is a hugely talented player and his confidence should only rise from this super-smooth performance.
