Aston Villa have invited free agent James Collins to train with the club at Bodymoor Heath, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that Steve Bruce has been in talks the 35-year-old, who remains available on a free transfer after he was released by West Ham at the end of last season.

It is understood that Villa are now plotting a swoop to sign Collins on a short-term basis, even though he is currently suffering with a muscle injury.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Bruce made a massive mistake at the end of August when he let Tommy Elphick leave on loan because he is desperately short of centre-backs.

Collins is available and his arrival would likely mean that Mile Jedinak can stop playing in the heart of defence, which is certainly good news for the Aston Villa fans, who have been frustrated by the Australian’s performances this season.

The former West Ham defender has plenty of experience and provided his current injury doesn’t mean that he is barely going to play this term, he should be a welcome arrival at Villa Park for his second spell with the West Midlands club.

Likely to happen?

As quoted by the Telegraph, Ipswich manager Paul Hirst has ruled out his side making a move for Collins so that effectively means that Villa are in a one-horse race to sign the Welsh powerhouse.

If his injury is not too serious, then you can expect this signing to be wrapped up fairly soon.
