A section of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight after Toby Alderweireld hailed the team’s 3-1 Premier League win against Fulham on Saturday.
The Belgium international was restored to the starting line-up alongside Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen in a three-man defence and subsequently claimed on his personal social media account that it was “not a bad afternoon” in which there was a “great team performance”.

Spurs supporters reacted in their droves as they took to Twitter, hailing the “awesome” return to the side of the centre-back and urging him to end his contract stalemate with the club.

You only need to read through the huge number of replies to Alderweireld’s tweet to understand what an immensely popular player he is among the fanbase of the club. The contract saga has not changed that, and nor has the fact his future is still up in the air in the final two weeks of the summer window. Tottenham fans have huge admiration for the centre-back and are desperate for him to not only stay but also a pen a new contract. The former is likely, and the latter is a growing possibility, following Alderweireld’s failure to secure a summer move to Manchester United. He could still go to a European big hitter before the 31 August cut-off, but that now seems unlikely after he was named in the starting XI against Fulham. It was telling that, with the score at 1-1 midway through the second period, Mauricio Pochettino hauled off Davinson Sanchez and not Alderweireld. When fit and firing, he’s one of the best central defenders in the world. Spurs fans have never been in doubt about that.
