Alfredo Morelos is close to agreeing a new Rangers contract that will make him the top earner at the club, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Light Blues centre-forward and his representatives held talks with manager Steven Gerrard and club officials to discuss a lucrative new deal.

Football Insider report Morelos, 22, is set to sign a bumper £30,000-a-week deal just five months after penning his previous contract, and which will fend off late-window interest from French sides Bordeaux and Marseille.

OPINION

Is Morelos worth all the fuss, and investment in his talent? Yes, he is. Sure, the centre-forward is far from the finished product, and his rawness can prompt immense frustration from the Ibrox masses, particularly when he misses chances a player of his talent should gobble up. But, he is also one of the outstanding strikers in the Scottish Premiership and possesses the ability to become a force in European football. It is a measure of his growing status that Morelos has just been called up to the Colombia squad for the first time following six goals in 11 matches in all competitions this season, which follows his 18-goal debut campaign for the Light Blues. It is clear Gerrard is a big fan of the striker and the potential he has to improve under his coaching this season. It is also notable that the manager has persuaded chairman Dave King and the Rangers board – as reported by Football Insider – to hand such a lucrative deal to the front man.
