Championship sides Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic are set to go head-to-head on transfer deadline day in a last-ditch attempt to snap up Rangers forward Josh Windass, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist claims on his personal Twitter account that the English pair are both keen on snapping the 24-year-old up before the window slams shut, despite being lined up to star for the Gers in Thursday’s Europa League qualifying clash against Maribor at Ibrox.

It is stated that Windass, son of former Premier League player Dean, would cost any prospective buyers in the fee of £2million, and that Ipswich have already launched an inquiry over his availability.

Opinion

Windass might not be everybody’s cup of tea at Ibrox but Gerrard obviously thinks he has something to offer the side, having given him game time in every one of the club’s matches so far this season. Two starts from five does indicate that he might not be a regular as the season progresses but letting him leave on deadline day, without bringing a reinforcement in, would be a risky move by the Light Blues, and probably not one worth taking with what is on the line. He is hit and miss but on his day he can change the game by himself, and while Gerrard might have brought in a handful of new recruits, not all of them are proven in the Premiership. Windass knows what it takes to succeed in the Scottish top flight and keeping him on board is definitely worth it over the sake of £2million. On the other hand, if his sale brings in a new recruit before the end of the window, then perhaps it is time for him to depart Ibrox. A tricky one for Gerrard, on a day where he really needs to focus on the Europa League qualifier.
