A section of West Brom fans have been raving about Sam Field after he earned his first appearance under Darren Moore’s leadership against Luton Town on Tuesday night.
Although Field, 20, is by trade a midfielder, Moore’s experimental tactics saw the Baggies wonderkid play on the left-hand side of a back-three, much to the surprise of those who travelled to The Hawthorns for the midweek fixture.
And as Albion walked away 1-0 winners courtesy of a first goal for the club by Oliver Burke, one player that some fans were left drooling over was Field, who impressed while playing outside of his comfort zone.

I thought he was possibly the best player for us today.

To give more serious context, we (as a nation) are absolutely obsessed with positional rigidness in our game. Field still young, let him learn some new facets to improve his overall game. If we do switch formations/systems around this season, it'll do him good

Can’t really take much away from that as it played out like a training session. Nice for Burke to get a goal though and 4 academy lads to play. Thought Harper looked good. Odd one with Field in defence but showed what a good footballer he is

Strikes me as a bit of a Robson type (not his level obviously). Remember him in his early Albion career playing all over the pitch (and looking good in each position).

Clean sheet first one of the season so that's a start. In the hat for the next round. Good to see field Harper and Burke all get some game time. As well as leko and Edwards. First goal for Burke. Plenty of positives today #WBA

OPINION
Who knew Field would be able to do such a good job as a centre-back? Moore turned a few heads with his team selection by placing Field in a back-three, but he did the job well in what was a fairly routine 1-0 win over Luton. The Albion academy graduate, who is a big supporter of the club, had not played a single minute under Moore’s leadership both this season and last, and maybe it is because he is being groomed to play in a more defensive role. Field is tall enough, clever enough and has a bit of pace about him, so if he works on his defensive game a bit more to improve tackling and marking, then maybe it could be a masterstroke by the Baggies boss. Don’t expect this to be the norm though. While some fans are excited about Field and undoubtedly want to see more of him, West Brom are more than likely going to revert back to the team that beat Norwich last week when QPR travel to the West Midlands this weekend.
