Swansea centre-back Federico Fernandez has arrived on Tyneside to undergo a medical with Newcastle United, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The reporter claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday that a £6million deal that sees Fernandez, 29, sign for the Magpies is now close after a fee was agreed between them and the Swans.

Newcastle only have three fit centre-backs in their squad at the moment following a long-term injury to Florian Lejeune and it appears as though 32-times Argentina international Fernandez is coming in as back-up.

Good move for Newcastle?

While Fernandez’s arrival certainly chalks off worries over the fact that the defensive options are pretty light at the moment, this is not an amazing signing.

Fernandez was part of the Swansea team that got relegated last season and he has not exactly been a stand-out for the Swans either playing in the shadow of the likes of Ashley Williams and Alfie Mawson.

He has plenty of experience though and £6million is not a terrible fee for someone who has over 100 Premier League appearances.

The former Napoli man may not be getting too much game-time for the Magpies though.

Likely to happen?

It appears as though this deal will be wrapped up in no time at all.

There is just over an hour left until the transfer window slams shut and with Fernandez now on Tyneside to have his medical, it’s fair to say that this move will be concluded imminently.
