Windass posted on his official Instagram account to thank Rangers for the memories during his two-year spell at the club along with a video of his favourite goals for the Glasgow side.

The son of striker Dean Windass, the 24-year-old can play as an attacking midfielder as well as a forward, a role well known by his father, and will now embark on a new journey with Championship outfit Wigan.

Some Rangers fans took to Twitter to wish him well, with one supporter saying ‘he’ll do well in the Championship’ while another was left ‘gutted’ about his departure.

OPINION

There was plenty of speculation regarding Windass’ future at Rangers over the summer and his form often divided Gers supporters, with many  not convinced that he was giving enough despite netting 18 goals in all competitions last season. After Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos found the target against St Mirren on Sunday, the fans may not be requiring his services as desperately as they may have hoped but Windass has the quality for Rangers to regret letting the Englishman depart Ibrox. With a host of new faces signed by Steven Gerrard, there is debate of whether Windass would be able to fit into the side and only seemed to perform in the big games for the Teddy Bears and had many moments during his two-year stint where he went missing during matches. However, if it wasn’t for Windass’ great eye in front of goal last season, Rangers would fallen even more considerably behind Old Firm rivals Celtic and 18 goals is an excellent return in a season. It will be interesting to see how he fares in the English second tier and if he could play to a consistent level against tougher opposition.
