Kyle Lafferty is set to complete his return to Rangers today after a fee was finally agreed with Hearts, according to the Daily Record.

The player is now discussing personal terms, which shouldn’t be a problem, leaving the 30-year-old striker to complete his move in time to be registered for the Europa League play-off against Ufa tomorrow.

It’s another major coup for Steven Gerrard and Mark Allen and it’s come at the perfect time to give them a boost heading into the two most important games of their season so far.

We think it could be the final piece of a jigsaw that’s been taking shape ever since Gerrard was announced as the new manager.

Lafferty knows what it’s like to win at Ibrox – he won three titles there in his first stay between 2008 and 2012.

He’ll also think that he’s got unfinished business there after moving on a free transfer after scoring 36 goals in 134 games.

That might not be a prolific record in the Scottish top-flight but Lafferty is being bought as back-up.

In Alfredo Morelos, they already have a striker who can rattle in the goals Rangers need to make a real stab at the league title.

But he needs cover and back-up for the easier games, to keep him fresh for the big games.

And Lafferty himself has the ability to come into any game and do damage. His winning goal for Hearts against Celtic in the league this season has already gifted Rangers three points. He’ll be hoping to add even more en route to at least one trophy this season.

We think Lafferty will prove to be a hugely important signing for Rangers. He might not be classed as marquee, but often it’s the support players that enable the stars of the side to reach the top.
