A section of fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mostly upbeat verdicts on Celtic’s reported pursuit of Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic.

The Daily Mail claim the Scottish giants are “looking into” a loan move for £13million Leicester summer signing Benkovic, who is on the club’s three-man centre-back shortlist along with Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna and Le Havre’s Harold Moukoudi.

This has prompted mainly enthusiastic responses on social media, including “all will be forgiven”, “would be quality” and it “would please me”.

COMMENTARY:

Celtic fans know their club are crying out for a new centre-back by Friday’s deadline, and are mostly impressed by the Benkovic link. With huge doubts over the future of Dedryck Boyata – despite his weekend winner after being brought in from the cold – the Scottish giants need a reliable and commanding performer at the back. Kristoffer Ajer, Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry have qualities but are either inexperienced or brittle, and there is no defensive leader to hold the backline together, especially if Boyata departs. Benkovic is inexperienced at the highest level, but has been capped by Croatia at Under-21s level and made 30 appearances in all competitions for Dinamo Zagreb last season as they stormed to the Croatian league title. Standing at 6ft 4in (source: Transfermarkt), he has the physique to dominate in the demanding SPL, and the potential to improve rapidly under a manager in Brendan Rodgers who has an impressive track record of developing young talent. With Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan the established central defensive partnership at Leicester and Jonny Evans and another summer signing Caglar Söyüncü providing cover, Celtic supporters can see this is a deal that is a real possibility.
