Celtic officials are to jet out on a mission to run the rule over a centre-back target in Europe this weekend, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon

Nixon, football correspondent for The Sun, reported on his personal Twitter account that the Hoops are set to watch an unnamed defender on the continent during this weekend’s round of fixtures.

The journalist was responding to a query from a fan who was concerned about the lack of transfer activity at Parkhead in recent days.

OPINION

This is promising news for Celtic fans like this one who are concerned over a lack of activity in the market in the past few weeks, although Nixon does not give any indication as to who this mystery centre-back could be. What is clear is that the Hoops do need defensive cover after a dodgy start to the season at the back, with the saga surrounding a potential exit for Dedryck Boyata not helping matters. Injuries and suspensions could mean that manager Brendan Rodgers has just one senior centre-back at his disposal this weekend, and that illustrates the need for cover to be brought in. It could end up that Rodgers needs to bring in two extra bodies if Boyata does end up leaving, although it looks like he may stay after the situation calmed down this week. Getting the right players in will be essential for Celtic after a poor start to the season saw them drop out of Champions League qualifying and lose in the league to Hearts, with rivals Rangers looking strong under new boss Steven Gerrard.
