Kris Boyd shared that if he was Brendan Rodgers he would have instructed the Celtic board to accept Fulham’s £9million offer for Dedryck Boyata.

The Kilmarnock attacker shared that he simply couldn’t understand why the Hoops didn’t accept the English clubs offer as he would have driven the 6ft 1in tall centre-back to London himself upon hearing the offer.

Boyd stated that the whole situation surrounding Boyata amused him as it’s funny that Celtic have gotten themselves into a predicament regarding the defender so early in the season.

“Look at Dedryck Boyata, he’s currently playing hardball with Celtic after missing out on a big-money move to Fulham,” wrote the forward for The Scottish Sun.

“Boyata and his agents are simply playing the game the way it has to be played, it’s ugly and unsightly but it’s football, like it or not.

“I just cannot understand why Celtic didn’t take the money Fulham slapped down on the table.

“Rodgers obviously wanted to keep him for the Champions League qualifiers but, for me, he should have instructed the board to take the £9million offer.

“I would’ve driven Boyata to London for that kind of money, but the fact the board turned down the cash proves they’re not just looking to get rich.”

“Bottom line is that it just amuses me how Celtic are in this situation just a few weeks into the season. It makes me laugh, truth be told.”

OPINION

Given that Sky Sports reported via Twitter on Friday that the Celtic defender had been exiled over refusing to play, it just shows what a mess the situation is. As Boyd states it’s bizarre that the Hoops didn’t accepted Fulham’s £9million offer for Boyata, as reported by the Daily Mail, and with hindsight they probably wish they would have. It is very unprofessional of the defender if he has refused to play but unfortunately as Boyd refers to that just how football seems to work these days. Given how public this saga seems to have gone, it’s hard to see how Boyata can ever kick a football for the Hoops again as supporters, nor his teammates, will be exactly keen to welcome him back with open arms. It’s unclear if there is anyway to end this scenario as the Cottagers can’t exactly come in with another bid as the transfer window has shut for them, so this could end up being a toxic situation all the way to January as it stands. While a European club, whose transfer window is open, may come in for Boyata, it’s going to have to be one that will offer him a big-money deal like Fulham would have likely offered him.
