James Collins is set for a shock return to West Ham after being treated badly and axed over email earlier in the summer, according to the Sun.

They claim that he has been training with them and that the owners are now considering a new one-year deal for him.

As a free agent he can still sign for West Ham despite the summer transfer window being shut.

Winston Reid is out for two months and Collins would battle Angelo Ogbonna, Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop for a place in the centre of the Hammers defence.

Good move for West Ham?

This is an odd one. Collins was desperate for a new deal before his contract expired but then his West Ham career seemed to end on a sour note after he was axed by email. The players were up in arms, Collins himself must have been furious and there obviously seemed no way back for ‘Ginge’. This report has come out of the blue. We had heard that Collins had been seen at the training ground but no-one was linking that with a move back until now. It could be a good move. The £100million overhaul by Pellegrini hasn’t gone so well to date and Collins could add some stability and experience behind the scenes. He wouldn’t cost anything but his wages.

Likely to happen?

Despite what happened, if West Ham made Collins an offer we think he’d jump at the chance for another year at his beloved West Ham. He never wanted to  leave and it means his time at the Hammers could end on a much better note than before, when the owners treated him really badly. He’s a free agent so there’s no barrier to him joining. It would be a shock but we hope it happens.
