Tottenham have pulled a u-turn over the future of Toby Alderweireld by choosing not to sell him this summer but defensive counterparts Danny Rose and Cameron Carter-Vickers are both set to leave, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper claim on their website that after having been linked with a move away from north London for most of the summer, he is now set to stay with the Lilywhites after making his first appearance of the campaign win the 3-1 win against Fulham.

However the same cannot be said for Rose, who is reportedly being plotted as a target for French champions Paris St Germain, while Carter-Vickers is said to be destined for a temporary spell in the Championship.

Opinion

Alderweireld seemed an absolute certainty to leave north London this summer after his contract issues with the club, but after the transfer window slammed shut in England, it appears as though minds have been changed in what could prove to be a gamble for the Lilywhites. To be honest though Mauricio Pochettino could not afford to let him go with the lack of defensive options at his disposal, with Alderweireld joined by Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez as his senior options, with Juan Foyth and Carter-Vickers acting as back up. If things change in January, then perhaps Alderweireld will be shipped out as Spurs cash in before his contractual clause comes into effect. As for Rose, with Ben Davies as first choice left back and Kyle Walker-Peters as back up, his future seems significantly less certain, and there should be no surprise to see him out the door before the end of August.
