Tottenham are reportedly set to make two deadline-day signings including a name yet to emerge in the public domain – and fans have taken to Twitter to react with scepticism and excitement.
Football London journalist Alasdair Gold claimed in a transfer column for the site today that he is expecting Spurs to have secured two arrivals “by the time 5pm rolls around” and believes “there will be a player that Spurs have kept close to their chest who will join late on”.

There appears a lack of faith from Tottenham fans. Not in the information of the reliable Gold, but in the club’s ability to get two signings through the door by the time the window shuts. Little wonder the Lilywhite faithful are sceptical. Spurs have had nearly three months to strengthen Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but have not taken the same approach they did over negotiating new deals with the manager and star man Harry Kane. Those extensions were signed off before the World Cup began. By contrast, Tottenham have been miles off the pace in the transfer window. Attempts to play the long game over both incomings and outgoings has resulted in stasis. There is still time for chairman Daniel Levy, the club’s long-time transfer and contract negotiator, to turn a disappointing window into a fruitful one, but it appears that few among the fans are holding their breath. They want and hope, but they do not expect.
