Jamie Carragher has made the extraordinary claim that Harry Kane will top the Premier League scoring charts for the next seven seasons.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the pundit and Liverpool legend is convinced the Spurs centre-forward is determined to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record while wearing the shirt of the club and will blow all rivals away for most of the next decade.

Asked who will win the Premier League golden boot for the 2018-19 campaign that got underway 10 days ago, Carragher threw his weight behind Kane.

“If you ask me the same question for the next seven years, I’ll always say Harry Kane,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He will take the penalties, he will never be left out and he has the mentality every season to be the top scorer and as I’ve said before, I think he’s going to break all kinds of records.

“I think it’s telling he has signed a six-year contract and wasn’t looking to Real Madrid. I think he wants to be the greatest scorer in Tottenham’s history and he wants the Premier League record also.”

OPINION

Given that Kane did not win the golden boot last season, when he was beaten to it by Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah, and that he will be 32 in seven years’ time, Carragher’s claim is fairly extraordinary, as well as hyperbolic. The six-year contract signed in May certainly offers Tottenham a degree of protection in terms of keeping their prize asset, but the days of one-club players appeared over and it would be a surprise if he spends his entire career at White Hart Lane, especially if the club continue not to spend on new talent, as was the case this summer. Nevertheless, a fit Kane will always score goals, wherever he is. He has already netted 141 goals in 215 Tottenham matches, 19 in 30 England internationals, and has the hunger and eye for goal that will put him in the top-rankers once again this season. Nevertheless, the competition is intense. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero could score 30+ this season in the league alone, and don’t bet against Salah doing the same again. Watch out for Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane, too, who has begun the campaign on fire at Liverpool. Kane has his work cut out to top the goal charts this season, never mind for the next seven.
