Belgian journalist: No Alderweireld agreement yet

|

Toby Alderweireld does not yet have an agreement to join Manchester United from Tottenham, according to a reliable Belgian journalist.

England-based Kristof Terreur, who covers Belgium players in the Premier League for newspaper HLN, delivered an update on the Spurs defender’s future on his personal Twitter account amid intense speculation he could make a last-gasp move to Old Trafford.

Reports in recent days have stated Alderweireld is close to joining United before the transfer window for Premier League deals shuts on Thursday evening.

OPINION

Alderweireld is pictured looking relaxed as he chats with countrymen Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen at Spurs training ground, but he is privately likely to be getting fidgety with just over 24 hours of the window remaining. Reports have varied in recent days on how close he is to a transfer to Manchester United, but thread running through them all is that the centre-back is keen to make the move to Jose Mourinho’s team. Should United meet their asking price, Tottenham are also willing to offload him. Money talks, and Tottenham are well aware that Alderweireld could run down his contract and take advantage of a loophole next summer than allows him to leave for £25million. Spurs are said to be holding out for £55million, at least, for the brilliant Belgian after he proved his fitness and form at the World Cup, but might have to settle for £10million less if they want the deal done tomorrow. Expect this one to go down to the wire.
