Alan Shearer took time out to send former Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong a message after his move to Blackburn was confirmed.

Blackburn announced the news on Monday morning as the 21-year-old returned to the club he spent a successful loan stint at.

Armstrong signed a five-year deal and Shearer wrote “Great news”, adding two clapping emojis. He also wished Armstrong good luck in his move.

OPINION

It’s a real shame that Armstrong didn’t work out at Newcastle. Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker and Armstrong would have loved to make it at the team that he came up through the youth ranks for. He’s obviously held in high regard around Newcastle and he’ll appreciate the message from Newcastle and Blackburn legend Shearer. Armstrong scored 17 in 26 games for Newcastle’s Under-23s and nine in 21 for Blackburn. He should do very well in the Championship and he’ll be hoping he can help strike them back towards the Premier League, where he’ll feel he’s got a point to prove. Fans are sorry to see him go but it’s for the best, although Rafa Benitez is surely in last-chance saloon over strikers. After Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joselu have both failed to work out, it’s all down to Salomon Rondon for Benitez.
