Newcastle United are fearing the worst over DeAndre Yedlin after the defender suffered an injury blow late on in the 2-1 defeat at home to Tottenham on Saturday, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Magpies are waiting to hear just how serious the American’s layoff is going to be after he hobbled off against Spurs, but are not expecting him to be back in action any time soon.

The right back, who is a firm favourite of manager Rafael Benitez having been a regular in the starting XI since signing from Tottenham, left the pitch to leave his side with just 10 men in the dying minutes of the sides’ Premier League opener.

Opinion

While fingers, toes, and anything that else that can be crossed will be over a swift recover for the defender, it sound as though Yedlin is set to sit on the sidelines for the foreseeable future in what is a nightmare start for the Magpies. Benitez already has a paper thin squad and missing one of his guaranteed starters does not help their case one bit. It is exactly what happened last season, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune both finding themselves ruled out through injury after the opening clash against Tottenham, and while Benitez might have learned his lesson, it appears as though Mike Ashley has not, preventing the manager from spending transfer funds on what now appears to be much needed reinforcements. There are a couple of names who could fill the void left by the USA international’s absence, but none are likely to live up to the standard set by Newcastle’s number one in the role.
