Numerous Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to deliver their immediate reaction to the shutting of the summer transfer window on Thursday (9 August).
The chance for Premier League clubs to make any new signings has passed, with a 7pm deadline to finalise any last-minute moves which might have been in the pipeline, including the Magpies’ reported swoop for Federico Fernandez, as claimed by journalist Lee Ryder.
However, with six signings through the door on a mix of loan and permanent deals, much of the Toon Army were still left disappointed with what they saw from their side, insisting it was not enough for the new season.

Yep very disappointing. I think it was Ashley’s last chance to show Rafa he’d back him. I’m trying not be completely deflated. I do think we’ll stay up this year, but what good is that when next May Rafa leaves and we’re back to square one? #nufc

Can only imagine what’s going through Rafa’s mind at the moment… he must be absolutely livid, devastated, distraught, heartbroken and a combination of everything.
Feel so so sorry for him. :’( #NUFC— Ryan (@RyanStripes) August 9, 2018
Depressing seeing Everton and other teams make mint signings and we need to settle with a relegated CB ? #nufc

Opinion
Despite all the hope and optimism over a fruitful final day of the window, Newcastle fans were handed exactly what they were expecting – a big fat nothing. Yes, Fernandez may well be on the way but is that the sort of signing that is going to get the Toon Army off their seats next season? Absolutely not. Instead it is Benitez being forced to scrape the very bottom of the barrel for some sort of reinforcements, and at least he has got something. The rage from the supporters is all directed at Mike Ashley and the way he is running the club must have Tyneside in tears. Newcastle with Benitez could be a real contender in the top flight if he was only handed some funds, but there is no sort of money coming his way. What a disappointment not only for those in the north east, but across the whole of the Premier League. A strong Newcastle United would be better for everyone, but instead they are being forced to settle for mid-table mediocrity.
