Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong is likely to leave St James Park next week as he seals his move to Blackburn, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

And that’s likely to be the last player out of Newcastle as Rafa Benitez spends the last six days of the transfer window looking to land targets.

Ryder added that Benitez is pushing hard for new players now and is hoping to see some progress over the next 48 hours.

They say it’s the hope that kills. And, according to Ryder, Benitez is still hoping for some good news on the transfer hunt in the next 48 hours. Newcastle fans have been here so many times they won’t have their hopes up. In January it came down to a last-minute scramble to get Islam Slimani on loan who arrived injured and hardly played. It’s farcical and you can only feel sorry for manager Rafa Benitez, who must be at the end of his second tether by now. However, while there’s still time there’s still a chance, and this update from Ryder will give Newcastle fans hope of some good news over the weekend. There must be money there – with Mitrovic and Armstrong leaving, you can only imagine that Newcastle will go all out to get another striker through the doors before it’s too late. This does sound like it’s the last exit from St James’ Park now, which means all the focus will be on incomings – at least from Benitez. Who knows what Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley are up to?
